"As we get further into the movie, the orchestra gets louder and louder, and then it kind of suffocates the cello. Hildur Guðnadóttir has composed a dark, ominous and rather unsettling sound for Joker, a score that simply terrifies in its atmosphere. Before she was born, her pregnant mother named her, literally, "War, Daughter of God," and declared that she would be a cellist. It consists pretty much entirely of just depressing and suspenseful strings-based atmospheric buildup, which while likely (as I haven’t yet seen the movie) works really well in the film, sadly I find entertains far less as a standalone experience.The atmosphere is incredible, but thematically and enjoyability-wise, I do find it lacking.Just finished it, and you basically summed up my opinion. The score particularly nails the “descent into darkness” aspect of the movie, and you almost feel that the music itself is turning evil over the course of the album’s forty minute runtime.
All hail Hildur Guðnadóttir‘s cello-ish Joker score, which seems to seep into and finally inhabit Arthur Fleck’s tortured psyche. After listening to the music for Chernobyl, I was afraid that the Joker score would also have a strong focus on sound design.
